When is the time right for headless commerce?

Given the popularity of headless commerce, it might seem like something you must do. In this chapter, we explain when you should and when you should not consider adopting a headless commerce approach.

When to use headless commerce

1. Is your store loading slowly?

Speed is critical for eCommerce, and a slow-loading website can damage your brand. Site speed has a massive impact on conversion rates, too, not just the user experience. If you want to increase conversation rates, adopting headless architecture to help improve site speed may be the way to go. 

2. Is your brand like all the others?

One of the problems with templated systems frequently found with traditional eCommerce solutions is that multiple stores use those templates and have the same look and feel as everyone else. If you want to differentiate your brand, you need to have the ability to customize and personalize your eCommerce store. With headless commerce, this necessary customizability is much easier. 

3. Are your content management needs growing in complexity

Content has become essential for top eCommerce brands. In order to facilitate the blogs, videos, images, and more to remain competitive and properly tell your brand story, you need the flexibility to connect your eCommerce system to a modern CMS platform. You can also adopt a headless CMS to handle your content management needs and deliver that content to various front-end channels with headless commerce. 

4. Can you easily expand to other regions? 

Ecommerce is a global phenomenon, and it enables your brand to target customers worldwide. However, to adequately meet the demands of multiple audiences, demographics, languages, and more, you need your frontend and content experiences to be as flexible as possible. Again headless commerce allows you to handle this so that your brand can expand to other regions more easily.

When not to use headless commerce

We’ve spent a lot of time explaining why you should consider headless commerce for your eCommerce store. The reality is that now may not be the best time for you to do so. Here’s when not to use headless commerce:

1. You want an all-in-one suite

If you want an all-in-one suite where all of your software tools come from the same vendor, then headless commerce might not be the best solution for your needs.

2. The potentially higher total cost of ownership

Headless commerce can save you the costs of having to work with a bulky suite of products that you don’t entirely need. However, if you decide you truly want best-of-breed across the board and get 10-20 different systems and components working together in one stack, you could wind up spending more than you bargained for.
